Broadcaster, presenter, writer, opinion leader and charity campaigner Lauren Mahon’s life was turned upside down five years ago when at the age of 31 she was diagnosed with breast cancer, which in her own words ‘was the universe playing a cruel joke when she didn’t have any b*stard tits in the first place’.
Following her diagnosis she was told by doctors that her life would never be the same - she was facing a ‘new normal’, which is a widely understood and used term in communities of those living with cancer and cancer survivors. Fast forward to 2021 and after the collective trauma of lockdown. we are all facing our own ‘new normal’... but with that comes hope and an opportunity for change and has someone who has already made an adjustment to the new normal, she’s here to share what she’s learnt.
Lauren turned her cancer diagnosis into incredible achievements, including launching an award-winning podcast ‘You, Me & The Big C’ and being named one of the BBC’s Top 100 Remarkable Women, ultimately becoming a positive and inspiring force for change, while empowering a generation of women along the way. However, this hasn’t come without its own challenges, and Lauren has been incredibly open about her own struggles and experiences of feeling overwhelmed.
In conversation with Radio 1's Sarah Story, Lauren discusses her own experiences of new normal and the coping mechanisms and rituals she uses - from moon cycles to masterbation - to stop herself from becoming overwhelmed.
Known for her relatable honesty and feisty wit, Lauren is a favourite here at OTO HQ and we can’t wait to welcome her to our virtual stage. We hope you can join us for what promises to be a heartwarming and intimate evening.
This live event took place on April 19th 2021 and is now available to watch on catch up
Whether you know her as the feisty, relatable girl, unknowingly matched with her mate, forever ‘friend-zoned’ and inexplicably unlucky in love, on Channel 4’s ‘First Dates Hotel’, or as one third of the powerhouse trio kicking cancer’s arse on BBC 5Live’s number one iTunes podcast ‘You Me & The Big C’, one thing is for certain; broadcaster, presenter, writer, influencer and charity campaigner Lauren Mahon is a force to be reckoned with.
And how do you begin to describe the achievements of a self-made female boss; who took a devastating cancer diagnosis and turned it into an online platform with a following of hundreds of thousands? And started a fundraising community that raises significant amounts of money that goes directly to help fellow cancer sufferers. And a successful merchandise company. And a number one podcast. The list goes on.
